Shopify, our top-rated ecommerce website builder, has introduced pricing in local currencies on checkout pages. For stores using Shopify Payments, customers will be able to see their order on the one-page checkout and the currency will update automatically depending on the customer’s shipping address.

This brings a personalized shopping experience to customers shipping products outside of the site’s default region.

How Does It Affect Customers?

The update improves the overall checkout process for customers, allowing them to see accurate pricing information when completing their orders. Shopify will determine and adjust the currency in use based on the customer’s shipping address.

However, if a customer wants to redirect their purchase to an alternative location, the currency will automatically switch to match the new shipping address. It’ll even include currency conversion fees when appropriate.

Not only is this convenient for customers but it also encourages sales since customers can view their total order charge in their local currency.

We recommend being completely transparent about the process in your website’s copy or FAQs. While the feature is there to improve the checkout experience, some banks might charge customers international transaction fees despite the order being in the customer’s local currency – so it’s good to highlight this ahead of time.

Who Can Benefit?

As mentioned, Shopify now lets stores apply local currency based on shipping address in its one-page checkout. The feature is only accessible to merchants using Shopify Payments, which includes all of the major players, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal.

If a customer places an order using another third-party payment provider, the checkout will use your store’s default currency instead.

With local currency determined by the customer’s shipping address, Shopify stores will now be able to cater to a wider audience and expand their global reach.
