  • Shopify has introduced a new POS terminal for its users for mobile and countertop selling
  • The new retail hardware is similar to the POS systems offered by Square Online, and like that brand, should allow for an easier time in a busy store environment

Ecommerce website builder Shopify has introduced a new Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal for its users. The terminal is primarily used for mobile and countertop selling, so Shopify users will be able to bring their online retail stores into the world of in-person shopping.

We recently covered that Shopify’s mobile terminal, the POS Go, would be coming to the UK and Ireland after already being rolled out in America. This new terminal is more dedicated to counter-checkouts, and promises a 99.99% uptime for internet connectivity, featuring both WiFi and Ethernet inputs, meaning no sale will get interrupted due to poor signal.

Shopify’s POS terminal is primarily designed to take payments, accepting tap, chip, and swipe payments at the counter with transaction rates beginning at 2.4% + $0.30. Customers will also be able to view items on the terminal screen, and store owners can customize the checkout with optional tipping and receipt selection.

Shopify will also let you fully customize the POS terminal with your store’s branding to help it really shine, unlike its closest competitor, Square Online’s POS system. The Shopify POS Terminal will start from $349, plus the concurrent transaction fee for each payment of 2.4% + $0.30.

Compared to Square Online, Shopify’s terminal has a much steeper initial price. Square Online’s POS Terminal begins at $299 and has a lower transaction fee of 1.75% per transaction.

Shopify’s move to hardware indicates a goal from the company to infiltrate the retail space in time for the holiday season, where it projected retail sales will rise between 3.5% – 4.6%.
